Are you looking for the best Xacto Knife to use on your leather craft projects? I have used a large barreled Xacto knife handle for years. I get a ton of questions and emails about where I get them and what blades I use in them. I found a new place to get them and while I was there, I also found some really great purse zippers to use in our shop. These zippers are really classy looking and in my opinion they look much better than just the normal YKK zippers that we all use.
This video shows how to make a new crossbody purse that I just came up with. The design is based on a real saddle bag design altered to work as a crossbody purse. I think the design of this purse is really nice and would be popular with many. This would be a great project to offer to your customers for gift ideas. You also may want to make one of these for that special lady in your life.
This crossbody purse goes together very well and has a lot of room to do floral tooling and personalization.
If you would like to purchase the pattern pack for this project, then Click Here to get that. The pattern pack is a DIGITAL DOWNLOAD in a PDF format that you print out on your own printer. The pack includes all the cut patterns as well as 6 different floral patterns.
Developing the Round Leather Handbag
About a month ago or so I was in the shop on a Saturday trying to come up with something new and different to make. My hopes were that I would use this time to be creative and develop a new product that would be like nothing I had ever created. I cut poster board all afternoon working with all kinds of different shapes, proportions, and layouts. I came up with many different ideas, but none of them seemed to be “that one” project.
It wasn’t a total loss though, because I learned some valuable things in that creative session as I usually do.
I went home that afternoon feeling a little like I had wasted the afternoon. I told my wife what I was trying to do that afternoon and that I just didn’t have much luck coming up with a “new” project, much less “that one” project. She casually mentioned doing a Round Purse. At first I wasn’t sure that this was the project since it seemed too simple. After visiting about it more I began to think it might make a neat project. She pulled up tons of photos of Round Purses on her phone and apparently they are really popular right now. The next day I went back into the shop and designed patterns for one of the easiest purses that I have ever made. Is it “that one” project? Probably not, but it is a good project and I had a ton of fun with it. Continue reading
Our newest video on our YouTube channel shows you How To Make a Wristlet Purse. I have had many questions about some good projects for using up the piles of scrap leather that we all generate in our shops. Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional saddle maker, you probably have leather pieces in a box under a workbench that you saved for that special project.
Well, here is that special project! I am the farthest thing from a professional bag/purse maker, but in this video I show you a simple wristlet purse that I designed that I believe is fairly simple to assemble and has a lot of potential. I have found that when it comes to making purses, options and coordinating different colors, leathers, exotics, fringe, conchos, etc is key for them to sell well. Continue reading
